Why Ko-C Rebranded to Kocee: The Power of a Name in Music Branding

Starting off as a lover of comedy, Senior Pastor on the microphone of 237Showbiz revealed that he got inspiration watching comedians like Gordons, Gandoki and Aboki 4 Christ. He assimilated their comedy with the help of Cameroon’s ace producer Emile Ngomba who recorded his first comedy. Senior Pastor also stated that Cameroonian comedian Big Mama Agatha also played a major role in mentoring him as a comedian.

When asked how he got into the Nigerian market, Senior Pastor revealed that he has been attending the AY Live comedy show in Nigeria since the year 2016, he will travel by water to Lagos, buy a ticket, sit as a regular guest and take down notes. During the red carpet, the comedian said he will make sure all the media houses interviewed him. Once they learned he is a comedian from Cameroon, they are always eager to know what brings him and that is how he got his face on many TVs and platforms in Nigeria.

Fast forward to 2018, Senior Pastor returned to Lagos for the AY Live comedy show and also registered for Ali Baba’s Spontaneity Talent Hunt where he emerged 2nd runner up. This platform opened many doors for the comedian. The talent hunt had judges such as Okey Bakassi, Ali Baba and AY Comedian. At this juncture, Senior Pastor will land in Nigeria and spend nights in car parks and sometimes the event venue, attend the event and travel back to Cameroon. The comedian revealed he was able to take his first flight and paid his first hotel bills in the year 2020 and that was his break into the Nigerian Comedy Industry, during his performance at Ali Baba’s Comedy Show. Grace found Senior Pastor that year as Ali Baba introduced Senior Pastor on stage because he wanted to introduce Senior Pastor to the Nigerian market. Feeling impressed, Ali Baba added that some Nigerian comedians complained a lot that Lagos is too far to come for shows but a comedian travelled all the way from Cameroon to come Nigeria for a competition and emerged third.

The Cameroonian comedian recently thrilled the audience of AY Live Easter Sunday 2022 with a brilliant performance, cracking ribs and leaving everything single person in the audience amazed.

“I’ve always wanted to perform at the AY Live. I reached out to Ali Baba asking for an opportunity to get on the AY Live stage, although he didn’t get back to me, he reached out to AY and when I arrived the hall, AY received me with open arms and told me Ali Baba had told him I was coming.” – Senior Pastor revealed.

Senior Pastor’s hilarious performance at the AY Live has earned him another spot at the Pencil Unbroken Comedy Show slated for September 2022.

“To break into the Nigerian market, you must be very good in what you do and you must be able to market yourself there. There are times I’ll go and perform for shows in Limbe, Douala and Yaoundé for free, just to keep the name alive and for people to know that a comedian like me exists.” – Senior Pastor commented on how to penetrate the Nigerian market.

The 32 year old sensation from Tandale, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania tops our list.

Conclusively, it is wothy to note that some views on YouTube can be bought and the numbers increase drastically. According to a close source, Mimie is leaving Pit Baccardi ‘s Empire Company with the main reason being that she felt exploited especially given the fact that she was one of the main breadwinner’s of the label . She felt used because after giving numerous hit songs like “Faya” , “Ten Ten” & money from performances in some the biggest shows in country, what she had as reward from the label wasn’t enough for her .

It’s with this Ideology that Mimie has decided to quit the label . Whether she is going solo or signing to another label remains a story for another day but as of now , we are witnessing the exit of a star from one the biggest labels in Cameroon

Queen Mimba recruited the services of Blu Nation singer Tzy Panchak and both served us vibes with their collaboration on the song “Jaloux”. Jaloux is a mid-tempo jam that tells us to never pay attention to people who gossip and talk about us behind our backs. Jaloux was produced by Dijay Karl and IVO and the visuals was done by Mr Tcheck. It has gathered 2.2 Million views on YouTube and counting.

With the wave of the new Mbole genre blowing with full force, Cameroonian youngster Watto de Souza makes it to our list after delivering an exceptional tune titled “La Fille La” produced by Jells production. The audio of the song made it to speakers on June 18, 2021 and the moving pictures premiered on November 12, 2021. Watto de Souza takes us through his neighborhood to tell us about the types of ladies there. Watto de Souza says not all girls are slots as there are some wife material ladies in his “Kwata”. Prior to the release of her debut album “Black Girl Magic”, Cameroonian sensation Rinyu dropped this smashing single titled “Controller” on April fools day 2021 and since then, she has been able to control her music game. Modern day Makossa and her dulcet voice blends the instrumentals by Dijay Karl and this time, Kwedi Nelson directed the video. Controller has a great success on the social media platform Tik Tok and has gather 5.6 Million views on YouTube. The song sits comfortably on the 4th spot on this countdown.

3. MIMIE – Faya Feat. LOCKO

Singer MIMIE’S musical career after joining Universal Music Africa heightened and spread all over Africa and international boundaries. She also won her first ever international award (Afrimma) in December 2021. Her collaboration with LOCKO on the song Faya bagged several nominations and achieved great success after its release. The joint effort of producer Tamsir and director Chuzih didn’t go in vein. Faya claims our number 3 spot on this list.

2. Happy d’Efoulan – Je N’ai Rien Fait Feat. Mani Bella

Happy’s success in the Cameroonian Music Industry is one which cannot be decoded or deciphered. He broke the strong walls of the tight music industry with Tchapeu Tchapeu and winning Revelation of the Year awards, he topped his game with a collaboration with Bikutsi heavyweight Mani Bella on the song “Je N’ai Rien Fait”. The song has a bridge which contributed to its success on trends, Tik Tok and dancers helped in the growth of the song. It has over 7 Million YouTube views as of the time of filing this report.

It would be rude for us to ask you guys to argue with your keyboard but you know pretty well the justice PhillBill did on the instrumentals that blend Afrobeats and Makossa. Director Chuzih as well understood the assignment in putting the moving pictures together for this one. Not only did Shabasiko touch every speaker, the song is still being awarded months after its release. It has succeeded to gather over 5.6 Million views on YouTube at the time of making this report.
