However, following Cameroon’s reunification and the abolition of the federal system in 1972, the country’s administrative and economic structures underwent major changes. Over time, commercial air services became increasingly concentrated around major aviation hubs, particularly Douala, while Tiko Airport gradually lost its former relevance.

Limited maintenance and the absence of sustained rehabilitation further contributed to concerns about the airport’s future.

A SYMBOL OF REGIONAL NEGLECT?

For some observers, the decline of Tiko Airport represents more than the deterioration of an old transport facility. They view it as part of a broader debate about the economic development of the South West Region and the distribution of public investment across Cameroon.

Some critics have linked the airport’s decline to the centralisation of power and economic activity following the end of federalism under former President Ahmadou Ahidjo.

However, claims of deliberate economic sabotage require specific evidence. The airport’s decline alone does not establish that it was intentionally abandoned for political or economic reasons.

COULD TIKO AIRPORT MAKE A COMEBACK?

Today, the question of reviving Tiko Airport raises important discussions about infrastructure, employment, tourism, agricultural trade and regional economic development.

BEAC’s Old Coins Phase-Out: Do Cameroonians Really Understand the Message?

Since the announcement of the withdrawal of older coins from circulation, confusion has spread across Cameroon, triggering disputes among traders, taxi drivers, and customers. Many citizens are now hesitant to accept certain coins, fearing they could lose their money if they receive the older versions.

In markets and on the streets, everyday transactions are increasingly becoming a source of tension. A passenger heading to Buea Town who tells a taxi driver they have a 500 FCFA coin may immediately be asked, “Which 500?” The question reflects growing anxiety over the validity of older coins, with some traders and transport operators refusing to accept them altogether.

But amid the confusion, an important question arises: Have Cameroonians truly understood the message communicated by the Bank of Central African States (BEAC) and other financial authorities?

Old Coins Remain Valid Until October 31, 2026

The BEAC, which oversees monetary policy and currency management across the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC), announced the gradual withdrawal and demonetisation of older coin series issued in 1958, 1959, 1971, 1976, and 1985.

However, the announcement does not mean these coins have immediately become worthless or should no longer be accepted in everyday transactions.

According to the transition schedule outlined in the announcement, the affected coins remain legal tender until October 31, 2026. This means they can still be used to pay for goods and services, including market purchases and taxi fares, until that deadline.

The premature rejection of these coins is therefore contributing to unnecessary disputes and making daily transactions more difficult for citizens who still possess them.

What Happens After October 31?

The withdrawal process is scheduled to take place in several stages, giving holders of the affected coins time to exchange them.

From November 1, 2026, to July 31, 2027, citizens will be able to exchange the old coins free of charge at commercial banks, microfinance institutions, and BEAC counters.

Between August 1 and October 31, 2027, the exchange process will be restricted to official BEAC counters. After October 31, 2027, the exchange operation is scheduled to end permanently, meaning the affected coins will no longer be exchangeable under the announced arrangement.

This timeline is intended to facilitate an orderly transition from older coin series to newer ones while giving the public sufficient time to exchange the affected currency.

Why Are Citizens Rejecting the Coins Already?

The growing reluctance to accept older coins appears to stem largely from fear, uncertainty, and a misunderstanding of the withdrawal timeline.

When people believe that accepting an old coin could leave them with money they cannot use, they naturally become cautious. However, when this fear spreads without a clear understanding of the official deadlines, it can disrupt commerce and create unnecessary hardship.

Market vendors may refuse payments, taxi drivers may decline fares, and customers may struggle to complete ordinary transactions. In the end, the confusion affects everyone, particularly people who depend on cash for their daily activities.

The Public Needs Clearer Information

The situation highlights the importance of public awareness and effective communication during changes to the currency system. Financial authorities, local administrators, community leaders, and the media all have a role to play in ensuring that citizens understand what the transition means and when the deadlines take effect.

For now, the key message is simple: under the announced schedule, the affected older coins remain valid until October 31, 2026. Holders should also take note of the subsequent exchange periods and use the designated exchange points within the applicable deadlines.

Rather than allowing fear to fuel arguments in markets and taxis, citizens should seek clarification from official sources and share accurate information with others.

“IS TEN YEARS NOT ENOUGH?” PRIME MINISTER DION NGUTE CALLS FOR PEACE IN BAMENDA

After nearly a decade of crisis, displacement and insecurity, Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute, has made a fresh appeal for peace in the North West Region, asking a question that captures the urgency of the moment: “Is ten years not enough?”

The Head of Government made the remark during a two-day working visit to Bamenda on October 14 and 15, 2026, as the government renewed its call for dialogue and a return to normal life in the region.

A visit marked by development and tradition

Arriving through Matazem and Santa, the Prime Minister inspected several infrastructure projects, including the newly constructed Mankon District Hospital. He also visited the Mankon Palace, where he was welcomed by Fon Fru Asaah Angwafo IV and traditional notables.

Dressed in traditional Toghu attire, Dion Ngute expressed satisfaction with the changes taking place in Bamenda. He said President Paul Biya had listened to the concerns of the North West population, adding that the community dialogue initiative would focus on finding solutions to the ongoing crisis.

“Enough is enough” Governor speaks out

On Thursday, October 15, the Prime Minister attended the official launch of the North West Community Dialogue initiative.

Regional Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique also delivered a strong message, declaring that “enough is enough” as kidnappings and other security threats continue to disrupt communities across the region.

Beyond the calls for peace, the governor highlighted ongoing development efforts, reporting an overall execution rate of 52% for development projects in the North West. He noted that the Ndu-Nkambe project had been completed, while work on the Ndu section had reached 65%.

However, insecurity remains a major obstacle, particularly along roads in Ndop, the Bambui stretch and parts of Bui Division.

A call for residents to return home

Governor Lele Lafrique urged residents to cooperate with administrative and security authorities, while encouraging displaced inhabitants to return to their communities and take part in local development.

The message from the two-day visit was clear: dialogue, improved security and collective participation are being presented as essential steps towards restoring stability in the North West.

“Cleanliness Is The Mindset”: Spaco Lee Calls On Buea Denizens To Take Action, Clean-Up Campaign Kicks Off

Buea-based comedian and influencer Ngamfon Derick Ndakwe, popularly known as Spaco Lee, believes keeping Buea clean starts with a change in people’s mindset. “Cleanliness is the mindset. America is America because of the mindset . Than to be blaming the Government, ley is put our force see how we can make it” he said during the city-wide clean-up campaign in Buea on Wednesday October 7.

Spaco Lee has been taking action himself by volunteering every week to clear blocked gutters and remove waste from the streets. His efforts formed part of a wider campaign launched by the Buea Council and the Divisional Officer to improve hygiene and sanitation across the city.

The three-month campaign was launched at Bongo Square, bringing together hundreds of volunteers, community leaders, transport unions, tricycle riders and NGOs involved in environmental activities. South West Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai also attended the launch.

Buea Mayor David Mafani Namange said the campaign is aimed at making Buea clean again. He called on residents to take part, stressing that keeping the city clean requires everyone’s effort.

Divisional Officer Abba Abdouraman said the campaign will also focus on educating residents about proper waste disposal and recycling, particularly plastic waste, which remains a major pollutant in the city.

For Spaco Lee, the message goes beyond one clean-up exercise. His weekly volunteer work shows that keeping Buea clean is not only the responsibility of authorities but also a duty that begins with individuals.

With the campaign expected to run for three months, the real test will be whether residents can turn the clean-up effort into a daily habit.

Tabe Bessong Rejects Claims of Weekly 15 Million Customs Payment

The Southwest Manyu Cocoa Farmers’ Cooperative is now pushing back against claims that its President, Chief Tabe Bessong, paid millions of Franc CFA every week to customs authorities.
The Cooperation describes the claims as false and says they do not reflect any transaction authorized, recorded or carried out by the institution. This feedback comes amid reports and social media publications alleging that Chief Tabe Bessong paid 15 Million Frs CFA weekly to the southwest customs boss, with other versions of the claim putting the alleged payments at 38 and 70 Million Frs CFA.

In a press release issued by the office of the SMCFC, the institution said it had taken note of the publications and wanted to set the record straight.

According to the statement, neither the cooperative nor its officials had at any point, witnessed, authorized, documented transaction in any form allegedly carried out by the President with the General of customs.

Chief Tabe Bessong on the other hand presents the claims as fake news and an attempt to ruin his reputation.

In this regard, the Cooperation has issued a caution in the handling of the matter and says the appropriate authorities have been informed. It has also warned that legal measures may be pursued against anyone found responsible for publishing and spreading what is considered defamatory .

Cameroon Return to FIFA Women’s World Cup After Eight-Year Absence

The Indomitable Lionesses are heading back to the FIFA Women’s World Cup after an eight-year absence, securing their place at the 2027 tournament in Brazil with a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the WAFCON quarter-finals.

Cameroon last featured at the World Cup in 2019 after also qualifying for the 2015 edition in Canada.
