Cameroonian music has grown exponentially in recent years and the growth has been mainly instrumentalized by hard work and precepts of mutual support but the growth has also brought some new names to the limelight and some have has so much impact that the growth of the industry can literally be credited to them. There has also been some tremendous display of talent and genius by some Cameroonian music acts who although gone unnoticed by the public are clearly very futuristic, so these are 1O Cameroonian Tracks released Before Their Time!

10.” Azig Azig” by Rythmz: The 2018 song which could potentially be a hit but due to very weak promotion got swept under the rug too soon is a terrific blend of folkloric sounds and more modern beats. It also addresses a very sensible topic, “Azig Azig” is an indelible proof that the duo is one of the best you will be able to find on the African continent, the maturity and composition makes it a track that could really be great some time in 2025!

8.” Bodimbea” by Charlotte Dipanda and Richard Bona: These two are probably Cameroon’s greatest vocalists and even though Richard Bona is now a full time critic of the Cameroonian government, he is still probably the one who has done the most for exporting Cameroonian culture to the outside world. It is therefore no surprise that the Grammy Award winner has a track on this list and it just turns out to be the one in which he joined another flag bearer of Cameroonian culture to come out in 2011 with something that will still speak to lovers of purely Cameroonian music in 2042.

 7. “Maggie” by Andy: This is the quintessence of a love story told in a way that will remain unrivaled for long. The people of the time this song was dropped lacked the opportunity to fully understand and enjoy such music, that’s why you are hearing about it for the 1^st time. It was released 6years ago but now would have really been the time, now or in 2years time.

6. “Status Update II” by Wan Shey, Young Holiday, N.A.T: Released erlier this year, Status Update II is the best example of conscious hip hop in Cameroon and it really comes at a time when the Cameroonian public doesn’t attach a lot of importance to conscience-raising music and as such it turns out to be one of the tracks that could really be great in the future.

 

5. “Tom Yoms” by Jovi: Of course everybody will expect this man to be somewhere on this list given that his music is popular for being out of the norm. “Tom Yoms” that’s the name of one of the most prolific makossa stars back in the days. He passed away about a decade ago, having his name as song title is already a great idea, but the combination of sounds and the text makes it totally futuristic, definitely not for 2017 when it was released.

4.” Faya Di Burn” by Gasha and Magasco: This song was the indelible proof of Gasha’s uniqueness in the Cameroonian music scene, despite the great amount of creativity and the message the song didn’t really go far. Not surprised given that it belongs to another decade not this one.

 

3. “Fun” by Dready Christ: Dready Christ is first and foremost Cameroon’s best chance at having a good reggae-style export. His track ‘fun’ is one which is at the same time conscience-raising, entertaining and intriguing. With real reggae beats and sound, Dready Christ’s “Fun” is definitely out too early.

 

2. “Toi et moi” by Salatiel: High Man General Salatiel is one Cameroon’s most decisive figures in the music business. He is the founder of Alpha Better Records and a very gifted producer is also a powerful vocalist and songwriter, his track “Toi et moi” is a rare gem of a love song, it is not this songs you hear every day with popular taglines and basic rhyme schemes, it is music which speaks to the soul of the listener presenting love in a whole new manner.

 

1. “Sawa Romance” By Locko: This song just gives me goose bumps immediately I think of it. Locko permitted a love story to be told in a unique way by blending, English dialects accompanying those with top-notch acoustics in order to give great pleasure to the ears. Definitely the maturity in this song is so great that it sorted of wasted when it was released in 2016. This definitely the one song which was clearly released a lot of years before its time.

The 5th edition of Afrimma Awards took place in Dallas Texas on the 7th of October 2018. Many Cameroonians home and abroad didnt pay close attention to this year’s edition because it happened to fall on the same day of the presidential elections in Cameroon and for an event which comes up once after 7 years that has been trending since Sunday, the interest Cameroonians had on it made the elections inevitable. Notwithstanding, we couldn’t leave you guys without a note or two on this year’s Afrimma Awards.

Cameroonian music apparently is gaining grounds within its boundaries and worldwide. Before urban music in Cameroon could grab a nomination in the yesteryears, it was a thug of war. However, nowadays, one can even argue and hit the tables if a good number of Cameroonian artistes don’t get nominated and if possible win on international stages.

The year 2018 came with a lot of expectations from the entertainment industry. While some are still waiting for a hit song from Cameroonian artistes, others were hoping we shall get over 20 awards in the music industry. The Afrimma Awards in Dallas had a good number of Cameroonian nominees such as RENISS, Charlotte Dipanda, Locko, Dr Nkeng Stephens and Gasha. These people happen to be one of the top talented Cameroonian urban artistes in Cameroon in the last 5 to 10 years. With the battles they had with other nominees in their various categories, only Stevens Music Entertainment’s Daphne brought home a report card with an excellent reward! She won Best Female Artiste In Central Africa, thereby saving Cameroon from shame.

While Wizkid won Song of the year with Soco, the likes of Fally Ipupa carried the night with 3 prestigious awards.

All in all, we take this opportunity to congratulate Miss Calée and the other nominees who didn’t get lucky enough. We urge Cameroonian fans and music supporters to be more engaged in voting for their favorite nominees each time they are nominated. Mind you, if you can do it for Daphne, you can do it for them all.

Cependant, nous constatons que plusieurs artistes anglophones cherchent très souvent à s’exprimer en francais lorsqu’ils participent à un show animé par un présentateur francophone. Oui, cela pourrait aussi être normal, surtout que nous sommes dans un contexte où 80 pourcent des activités se font en francais. Toutefois, précisons quand même que le caractère bilingue est institutionnel et n’oblige en aucun cas à un citoyen la maitrise de toutes les deux langues. Même ci ceux qui le font ont plus d’avantages. Raison pour laquelle certains artistes comme Stanley Enow, Jovi, Locko, Gasha et bien d’autres, ne ménagent aucun effort pour s’intégrer puisqu’ils se sentent à l’aise dans l’usage du Français comme l’Anglais.

Etre un artiste bilingue voudrait tout simplement dire être capable de comprendre ce que l’autre dit en face de nous, en utilisant notre deuxième langue. Ce qui donne la possibilité à un artiste qu’il soit anglophone ou francophone de répondre à une question qui lui est posée soit en anglais ou en francais, d’utiliser l’une de ces langues pour repondre. D’ailleurs même, n’est-ce pas tout dépend de lui. On se souvient encore d’un artiste plasticien congolais qui était invité sur la chaine française de l’information en continue France 24. Il répondait à toutes les questions qui lui étaient posées en français, en Lingala sa langue natale. Cela a fait marrer plusieurs téléspectateurs. Puisque c’était un peu comme du théâtre. Mais bon, qui sait si cela ne faisait pas aussi partie de son art, puisqu’il faut bien rester originel. En tout cas son message était passé !!!!

10. Cyndy Vox

On our 10th position for the female Cameroonian artistes to watch out for in 2018 we have Cyndy Vox. Cyndy happen to pave her way into the Camer music scene when she did her cover for Ko-C’s Bollo C’est Bollo. The cover recorded close to 50.000 YouTube views and we’re getting info that the singer and Camer’s fastest rapper are currently working on something to be released soon. 2018 looks promising for Cyndy and if you don’t want to miss out, don’t take your eyes off her.

9. Museba

Museba is not a new name as far as Cameroon Music Entertainment is concerned. After going low for over 3 years when she lastly dropped her international collabo African Mama featuring one of Nigeria’s biggest artistes J Martins, Museba bounces back with another single Gossiphallelujah. Will she deliver more this 2018. Let’s keep a close eye on her as well.

8. Krys M

Lone female Big Dreams Entertainment employee Krys M is another lady who seems to be coming into the game with full force. With many covers she has been uploading on YouTube, she later released her first official single T’oublies. The year looks promising for her, she’s hot, talented and fiercely protected by Big Dreams family. Even if she lacks a key, the likes of Locko, Koc and the newly signed Sojip are there to lend a hand.

7. T’neeya

German based Cameroonian dancehall senstation T’neeya is one of those under rated female artistes who needs a the spotlight pointed at her for a minute so the world see what she has to offer. With series of covers she had done, for example Mr. Eazi’s Pour Me Water, T’neeya added an official single Hold Me Down to her name. The song has recorded about 21K YouTube views and counting. She holds down our number 7 spot.

6. Gasha

Many of her fans had given up on her. Her music career had reached a point where it was neither moving forward nor backward. We remember when she dropped 2 singles, Murder and We Still Dey FT Nabil. Still no mountains were moved. Fortunately, things began taking shape when she released her latest single ”Back To Life”. The title itself really showed some light at the end of the tunnel for the singer. Moreover,2018 looks promising for her as we see her hanging out with the Blueberry City families and Bamenda Boy’s finest Magasco. Keeping our fingers crossed, we hope to see her moving forward.

5. Mihney

Signed to Eben Entertainment, Mihney is also a promising female Cameroonian artist and one to watch out for this 2018. She dropped her first single Depuis Quand in 2016. An Edi Ledrae produced track. Since then she went off the scene. Working hard and getting signed by her record label, she recently released her latest single Pandémie which has been getting appreciation from her fans. With a good label behind her. 2018 looks promising for her.

4. JOY

Makeup artiste turned singer Joy says she does music for the fun. Well its obvious she does, evidence from the 1.0,1.5, 2.0 mash up series she has been doing. Her popular Mash up series has elevated her music career to another level with hundred thousands YouTube views. The big question is, will she end up doing just mash up? We believe many of you want to see how original she can be. Thus she needs to drop her own singles. 2018 is the year to do so. Rumour has it that she might be dropping her first single soon. We can’t wait.

3. Senge

Senge is not an artiste of 2017, neither is she an artiste of 2016. She has been dropping songs way back. It just happens to be that her latest release Tabala gave her a lot of exposure in the Cameroon Music Entertainement globe. With over 97.000 YouTube views for her song Tabala, 2018 should watch out for this talented lady. Her style seems different and her music easily relates with her audience.

2. Briana Lesley

Briana Lesley, a model, vixen turned singer is also one hot lady to watch out for. Hot both in physique and style, the Falling singer shall be wowing most of us this 2018. We’ve had confirmation from few of her producers that she’ll be bringing in fire this 2018. Apparently, we shall be needing fire extinguishers to cool the heat. Briana also started by dropping covers on YouTube and released her first single Falling in 2017. While waiting for more, we have our fingers crossed.

1. Shura

Shura is already breaking boundaries with her single Allez Dire. When your first single is a hit, there’s a great chance your next will be nothing different. The way she fuses the French at the end of every English line is just exceptional. We’ll advise she maintains that style. She is a great talent, young and has a lot to prove. With Stevens Music beside her, she has nothing to worry about but just to keep working. 2018 looks promising for her allez dire.
