POISON IN OUR MÈCHES: How Synthetic Hair Sold to Black Women (also in Cameroon) Is Loaded with Cancer-Causing Chemicals and Lead

From the busy salons in Mokolo and Marché Central to neighbourhood hairstylists across Douala, Yaoundé, Buea, and Bamenda, installing mèches, whether for rastas, knotless braids, or twists is a regular routine for millions of Cameroonian women. It is affordable, practical, and saves natural hair from daily stress. But a shocking laboratory investigation reveals that the synthetic extensions packed in our local beauty shops carry dangerous, unregulated poisons.

The Alarming Test Results

A laboratory testing investigation by Consumer Reports analyzed synthetic braiding hair fibers commonly imported and sold worldwide, including the fiber types widely distributed across Central Africa. The findings are alarming:

100% Contained Cancer-Causing Chemicals: Every single brand tested positive for hazardous chemical compounds known to cause cancer.

Massive Lead Levels: 9 out of 10 products contained heavy lead, exceeding safe health limits by 600%.

Dangerous Fumes and Irritants: All tested fibers emitted volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—industrial chemicals that irritate the lungs and skin.

Why the Risk Is Higher in Cameroon

In our tropical climate—especially under the intense heat and humidity of coastal cities like Douala or the dry heat up north—scalp sweat and open pores speed up chemical absorption. When synthetic hair sits tightly bound to the scalp for four to six weeks, body heat and natural oils break down the chemical coatings on the fibers, allowing toxins to seep directly into the skin.

Furthermore, imported synthetic hair bundles rarely undergo rigorous chemical testing before hitting open-air markets. Because these fibers are sold as accessories rather than cosmetics, they bypass strict health inspections.

The Truth Behind the “Mèche Itch”

In Cameroon, it is common to hear women complain about intense burning, severe itching, and bumps on the nape or scalp just days after fixing mèches. For years, this was blamed on tight braiding or sensitive skin, and treated simply with menthol hair food, methylated spirit, or oils.

The reality is far more serious: that burning sensation is often a direct reaction to industrial chemical coatings and flame retardants. Prolonged exposure can trigger migraines, persistent scalp inflammation, and chronic internal toxic buildup.

How to Protect Your Health in Cameroon

You do not have to abandon protective styling entirely, but taking precautions is critical:

The ACV Detox Bath: Before taking your packs of mèches to the salon, soak the hair in a basin of warm water mixed with one cup of Apple Cider Vinegar (available in supermarkets like Dovv, Carrefour, Mahima, or local pharmacies) for 20–30 minutes. You will see a cloudy white film rise to the top—that is the chemical coating. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and let it air dry completely before braiding.

Opt for Traditional & Natural Styles: Revisit traditional African threading (coiffure au fil), natural hair cornrows, or flat twists using natural shea butter and palm kernel oil.

Invest in Reusable Human Hair: While human hair extensions require a higher upfront cost, they contain no synthetic flame retardants and can be washed and reused for years.

Beauty should never put your long-term health at risk. It is time for Cameroonian women to demand clean beauty products, and to take simple steps to detox every single pack of hair before it touches the scalp.

Cameroon Return to FIFA Women’s World Cup After Eight-Year Absence

The Indomitable Lionesses are heading back to the FIFA Women’s World Cup after an eight-year absence, securing their place at the 2027 tournament in Brazil with a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the WAFCON quarter-finals.

Cameroon last featured at the World Cup in 2019 after also qualifying for the 2015 edition in Canada. Their 2015 campaign ended in the group stage, while in 2019, they were eliminated by England in the Round of 16. After missing the 2023 tournament, the Lionesses have now sealed their return to the World Cup for their third appearance since 2015.

Cameroon join Algeria, Morocco and Malawi as the four WAFCON semi-finalists who have already qualified for Brazil 2027. The tournament will run from June 24 to July 25, 2027, giving the Lionesses another opportunity to make their mark on the global stage.

The quarter-final losers,Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Africa ,still have a route to the World Cup. The winners of the upcoming playoff matches between Ivory Coast and Ghana, and Nigeria and South Africa, will advance to the 10-team intercontinental play-offs in November and December, where three World Cup places will be available.

So Much Respect: What Does Fally Ipupa See in Stanley Enow?

This past Saturday, May 2, 2026, Fally Ipupa made history. For the first time ever, the Congolese superstar headlined the Stade de France in Paris, a venue that holds up to 80,000 spectators per show. Sharing that stage on the night were some of the biggest names in music, Youssou N’Dour, Wizkid, and Matt Pokora, among others. It was a night that confirmed what many already knew: Fally Ipupa is not just an African star. He is a global one.

But amid all the spectacle, a question quietly resurfaced in Cameroonian music circles, one that has been circulating for years now: why does Fally Ipupa show Stanley Enow so much love?

It’s a fair question. Fally doesn’t extend his circle easily. Since his solo debut in 2006, he has built a career blending traditional Congolese rhythms with international sounds, rising from protégé of Koffi Olomidé to headlining the biggest stadium in France. A man at that level is selective about who he calls a peer.

And yet, the Bayangi Boy keeps getting the call.

The two have collaborated not once but twice, on “Love” from Stanley’s 2019 album Stanley vs Enow, and again on “Fally” in a subsequent project. That kind of repeat collaboration from an artist of Fally’s stature is rare, and it doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because someone has earned it.

So what did Stanley Enow build to deserve this?

It arguably started with one song. When “Hein Père” dropped in 2013, it didn’t just blow up in Cameroon. Trace TV labelled him Africa’s musical revelation of the year, and the track hit number one on Reverbnation’s Cameroon charts and Trace Africa simultaneously. Here was a young rapper from Bamenda who had cracked the continental code on his very first try.

Then came the moment that put his name in the history books permanently. At the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards in Durban, Stanley Enow walked into a Best New Act category that included Burna Boy from Nigeria, Heavy K from South Africa, Phyno from Nigeria, and Uhuru from South Africa, names that would go on to define a generation. He beat them all. Stanley Enow became the very first Cameroonian artist to win in any category at the MAMAs. Not nominated, win. Against Burna Boy. Against Phyno. In front of all of Africa.

That is the kind of moment that travels. That is the kind of moment that makes artists across the continent sit up and take notice. Perhaps even a certain Congolese superstar who, incidentally, was also performing at that same ceremony.

And then there is the catalogue of collaborations. Davido. Mr Eazi. Diamond Platnumz. Sarkodie. Ariel Sheney. Yemi Alade. Artists from Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Côte d’Ivoire, the DRC, a sweep of the continent’s biggest pop names across different eras and genres. Few artists from Central Africa, let alone Cameroon, have built that kind of cross-continental credibility in the modern era of African music. It’s the kind of résumé that speaks a language every serious artist understands.

Nobody has come out and spelled out exactly why Fally Ipupa holds Stanley Enow in such high regard. Maybe it’s the shared history of collaboration. Maybe it’s the respect of one craftsman for another who has consistently shown up on the big stages. Maybe Fally sees in Stanley something that many Cameroonians are still catching up to, a man who quietly became his country’s most internationally connected artist of his generation, and who did it without fanfare, one feature at a time.

Whatever the reason, when Fally Ipupa gives you a spot in his universe, it means something. And Stanley Enow has had that spot more than once.

That is not luck. That is a career.
